Tangerang, May 21, 2025 – Indonesia’s Oil & Gas industry has reaffirmed its strategic role as a key pillar in achieving national energy independence and supporting economic growth. This commitment was demonstrated at IPA Convex 2025, which was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, at the ICE BSD in Tangerang (May 21).
In his keynote speech, President Prabowo emphasized that energy resilience is a fundamental driver for achieving the government’s target of 8% economic growth within the next five years. “The availability and sustainability of our national energy supply are crucial for accelerating development and improving public welfare.
“By boosting Oil & Gas production and reducing imports, we can achieve energy self-sufficiency and redirect state spending to benefit the people,” he stated. He further underlined the importance of real and sustained synergy between government and industry players to realize this vision.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, in his official remarks, stated that the government continues to push for breakthrough initiatives to increase national production.
Key projects featured at IPA Convex 2025 include accelerated gas production by Eni at Merakes East, development plans for the Geng North field, enhanced exploration efforts by Mubadala Energy in South Andaman, and ExxonMobil’s ongoing Banyu Urip Infill Clastic drilling campaign, alongside their potential investment to explore opportunities for Indonesia to become a regional and domestic Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Hub.
Another notable initiative is the development of the Forel and Terubuk fields by Medco E&P in Natuna, which plays a vital role in supporting national energy security. In addition, three new oil & gas working areas will be officially launched during the event, alongside the signing of 24 commercial agreements—marking a significant step forward in strengthening Indonesia’s energy landscape.
“Achieving these goals requires strong collaboration among regulators, PSC contractors, technology providers, and the broader industry ecosystem. IPA Convex is a strategic platform that fosters and reinforces this collaboration,” emphasized Bahlil Lahadalia.
A Forum for Collaboration, a Showcase for Innovation
IPA President Carole J. Gall highlighted that the upstream oil & gas industry remains the backbone of national development and a key driver of economic growth, while also playing an essential role in the energy transition.
“IPA Convex is more than an exhibition. It is a collaborative forum that brings together government officials, PSC contractors, technology providers, academics, and students. Over the three-day event, more than 80 speakers will share their perspectives in a range of conference sessions, accompanied by hundreds of technical presentations showcasing innovations and practical solutions—from improving exploration efficiency to advancing decarbonization technologies. This reflects the industry’s dynamism, relevance, and commitment to supporting Indonesia’s journey toward energy independence,” Carole stated.
